How Do You Get to Atami from Tokyo or Haneda? Shinkansen, Odoriko and Buses from the Station
This guide is for visitors heading to Atami, a city in Shizuoka Prefecture. It covers the train from Tokyo, the link from Haneda Airport, luggage rules on the Shinkansen, and the buses and taxis you will find at Atami Station.
We used pages from Atami City, the Atami City Tourism Association, Central Japan Railway (JR Central), the Haneda Airport passenger terminal and Tokai Bus. All were read on 2026-10-04. Timetables, fares and services change, so check with the operator before you travel.
The quickest way: the Tokaido Shinkansen from Tokyo
Atami City's page for visitors says the Kodama on the Tokaido Shinkansen takes about 45 minutes from Tokyo Station. The page was last updated in March 2017, so treat the time as a rough guide.
JR Central lists three lines at Atami Station: the Tokaido Shinkansen, the Tokaido Main Line and the Ito Line. The Shinkansen ticket office at the transfer gate is open from 5:55 to 23:25.
JR Central says the Nozomi, Hikari and Kodama all run on the Tokaido Shinkansen. The city's travel time is for the Kodama. When you book, check that your train actually stops at Atami.
During Japan's peak travel periods, every seat on the Nozomi is reserved. JR Central warns that non-reserved cars on the Hikari and Kodama may then be very crowded. It recommends booking a reserved seat in advance.
Its online reservation service lets you book with a smartphone and a credit card. Some tickets can be booked up to one year ahead, for up to six people at once.
Without the Shinkansen: the Odoriko on the Tokaido Line
The same city page gives about 1 hour 20 minutes from Tokyo by the limited express Odoriko on the Tokaido Main Line.
Atami Station is shared. JR Central runs the Shinkansen, and its station page lists East Japan Railway (JR East) as a connecting railway. The tourism association's access page links to both companies, and to Izukyu for the line from Ito to Shimoda.
From Haneda Airport
The Haneda Airport passenger terminal says the airport connects directly to the Keikyu Line and the Tokyo Monorail. Its guide gives about 15 minutes to Shinagawa Station and about 30 minutes to Tokyo Station. These times are estimates.
JR Central's Shinagawa station page lists the Tokaido Shinkansen and names Keikyu as a connecting railway. So one route is the Keikyu Line to Shinagawa, then the Shinkansen to Atami. Check that your Shinkansen stops at both stations.
The other route is to Tokyo Station first, where the city's 45-minute Kodama time starts.
Luggage on the Shinkansen
JR Central's luggage rules depend on the total of length, width and height:
- Up to 160 cm: keep it at your feet or on the overhead rack. Large, heavy bags of this size can also go in the baggage area on the deck, without a reservation.
- 161 to 250 cm: you must reserve a seat with an oversized baggage area when you buy your ticket. Without one, a baggage fee of 1,000 yen including tax is charged.
- Over 250 cm: the bag cannot be taken on board.
Non-reserved cars and some reserved cars have no seats with an oversized baggage area.
Buses from Atami Station
JR Central lists two bus companies at Atami Station: Izuhakone Bus and Tokai Bus.
Tokai Bus uses stands 3 to 8 in front of the station. Its list includes these routes:
- Stand 4: loop routes via the Izusan Jinja-mae stop.
- Stand 5: buses to Izusan and Yugawara Station via Aizomebashi.
- Stand 7: buses to Atami Port, run jointly with Izuhakone Bus.
Tokai Bus has an information desk near the station. It is open from 9:00 to 18:00 and normally closed on Wednesdays. It opens on Wednesdays that fall on public holidays, at New Year, in Golden Week and from 13 to 16 August.
On Tokai Bus, board at the front door and touch your IC card on the reader. Touch it again when you get off, and the fare is taken then. Suica, PASMO, ICOCA and other nationwide IC cards are accepted. They cannot be used on highway buses or scheduled sightseeing buses.
If your card is short of money, you can top it up on board with 1,000-yen notes only. Ask the driver while the bus is stopped.
Atami City says the "Yu-Yu Bus" sightseeing loop has been suspended since Saturday 11 October 2025, until further notice. The city adds that Izuhakone Bus sells a one-day ticket for its Atami routes at its information desk in front of the station.
Taxis: avoid unlicensed "white taxis"
Atami City, Shizuoka Prefectural Police and the transport ministry's Shizuoka office warn visitors about unlicensed taxis. In Japan, you may not carry paying passengers in a private car without permission, including through ride-hailing apps.
If you use one, the police may question you. If you are hurt in an accident, you may not be covered by insurance. The flyer asks you to check the colour of the licence plate.
White plates are allowed only as an exception. The car must show "ride-share" in a visible place such as the windscreen, or "paid transportation vehicle" on both sides.
Driving
For drivers from Tokyo, the city suggests the Tomei Expressway to Atsugi IC. From there it gives about one hour, or 60 km, to Atami. The route uses the Odawara-Atsugi Road, the Seisho Bypass, the Manazuru Road and the Atami Beach Line.
The city says driving times are only a guide. Roads can be busy on some days of the week and during events.
What we could not verify, and therefore left out
- Which Hikari trains stop at Atami, and current Shinkansen journey times. The city's times date from 2017.
- Shinkansen and Odoriko fares. We could not read JR East's pages, and we did not find fares on the JR Central pages we used.
- Direct buses from Haneda Airport to Atami. We found none on the official pages we read.
- Bus fares, timetables and the price of the one-day ticket.
- Whether staff at the station ticket offices and bus desks speak English.
